Joyful Modification

This weekend we had a “free” day at the Troyna house. By free I mean generally free from any obligations so we were all under the same roof for most of the day. In addition to that the weather was PERFECT for……..window cleaning…ugh! Our house is a bit older so we don’t have those fancy double hung flip down do hicky windows….we have these lovely big heavy windows that you literally have to take each piece completely out to wash both sides and then put them all back in. This process takes Cory and I a good 3 hours to do the entire house, so it only gets done twice a year, if we are lucky. Saturday was our “lucky day” we got to clean windows!! While doing this I decided that I was going to give our bedroom a little “update”, I had to move everything to get to the windows anyway so I might as well clean and spruce up while I’m at it….right?!

Three years ago Cory surprised me with a completely new bedroom while I was away for a weekend. He enlisted the help of my mom and some friends and carpeted, painted, and redecorated the entire room. It was beautiful, see picture.

But people that was three years ago. I have probably rearranged six times since then! So I wanted to give the room an update, mostly to add some brighter colors (I’m on a color kick these days) and change out some of the decorations. However, I didn’t want to remove and redo everything for several reasons, those being:

1. I like the purple wall and the paint is actually still in very good condition

2. I wanted to re-use as much as possible to not hurt the feelings of my dear husband.

3. My bedding was mostly still in good condition so I wanted to use that.

4. I considered painting my furniture, however, it was a gift from Cory’s grandmother when we got married, so does have some sentimental value, and the thought of hauling it all out, painting it, hauling it back in, well it was just overwhelming.

5. I am not a patient person so I was looking for some quick, easy, immediate results.

I shopped COMPLETELY LOCAL and I only spent $65 on the total room redo. So here it is…my new bedroom and my fun weekend project:

Let me break it down for you. I started by simply flipping over my bedspread and using the plain purple side.

I made the wreath out of old hymnal pages and hot glue, total cost $1 (for the purple flower). I purchased a new runner for my dresser and two others for the side tables at our local antique store for $3.00 and the green basket for $2, the runner on the bed is scrap material from my mom’s upholstery shop, all other decorations were from around my house.

I found these bird pictures at the antique store also, I repainted them with spray paint for $4, the large orange frame I got at a garage sale for $.50, painted it with the same paint. The other two pictures I already had, the only thing I did was modge podge the frame on the left with paper I already had. The bed pillows I found at Dollar General and spent a total of $29.50 for them and the lamp on the right and the two lamp shades cost $17.0,0 also purchased at Dollar General. The filing cabinet side table was purchased at another local antique store for just $8.00.

Finally, the leaf with the jewelry came from my mom’s house, the idea did too, it was free! I am loving the colors and the changes so far.  I don’t know about you, but my style changes often, trends change, new colors are introduced, you know how it goes. I like change, I always have and when it comes to my home I am usually not afraid to try something new, or in my case try using something old and making it new to me. Just another way for me to be me and channel my inner creative self and find JOY in the process!

About believingjoy

Who am I? That's a good question! I am Jen...a blemished woman who enjoys a tidbit of tidyness mixed with dash of craziness to create a life that is simply mine! I adore my 4 children and their daddy. I love little bits of wild like tattoos and things that make us unique. I like to mix vintage with new and strive for progress over perfection! I believe that not a single person on this planet is perfect and that's okay, it's what makes us who we are. My desire is to find joy is all circumstances with a smile and a choice to believe.
