Today is a gloomy day, so how about a gloomy subject…the new F word…Forgiveness.
Forgiveness is difficult. It is hard to ask for and it isn’t easy to offer. In order to move forward we must forgive.
Forgiveness is a choice. Sometimes we have to choose to forgive and accept an apology we may never get.
Forgiveness is an characteristic of the strong. Holding on to anger, hurt, resentment, fear, and grudges makes us weak. Literally weak of the spirit and of the physical body. Not forgiving only hurts you. This is true in forgiving ourselves, which is the absolute hardest to do. But the longer you hang on to the anchor the farther it pushes you down, let go of the anchor and rise.
The old saying goes “we can forgive, but we never forget.” This maybe true, but when we remember, we forgive again, and again, and again.
Jesus says in Matthew 18:22 “Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” (1)
The Golden Rule is to treat others how you would want to be treated….right? Jesus says in Matthew 6:14 “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.“(2)
This is not only true in forgiving others, but in seeking forgiveness as well. If we want someone to forgive us, if we want Jesus to forgive us, we have to ASK!
There are few things more freeing in life then seeking forgiveness and granting forgiveness. Forgiving breaks the chains. Forgiveness heals YOU.
“Freedom is what you do with what’s been done to you.” Jean-Paul Sartre
Be free and FORGIVE!
